Event Information
About this event
Work On is a workshop series giving insights from the worlds of visual art, theatre, journalism and film about routes for getting work put on.
What are the approaches? Who is involved in decision-making and how are relationships developed? What do these industries look for in commissioning or producing work?
Writing an Artist Manifesto
Six years ago Paula Varjack was mentoring emerging artists who had expressed fears and anxiety about their future in the arts. Paula wanted to write something to give them hope. So she reflected on everything she had learned in her career, all the advice she had been given that helped, and she wrote a manifesto.
The manifesto became part of the show she was developing, Show Me The Money, which was itself an investigation about how artists survive, thrive and make work.
Since then, Paula has used the act of writing artist manifestos as a way to set creative and career intentions, but also to put forward ideas of best practice in general.
In this workshop we will read and reflect on a range of existing manifestos, while writing manifestos for ourselves and for the arts sector/arts communities we are part of. We will think about think about how individual and collective action can be in dialogue, at a time when we have time to reflect and finding ways to think forward.
About the Speaker: Paula Varjack
Paula Varjack is an artist working in performance, video and participation. She makes work as a way of making sense of and communicating with the world. Particularly interested in making the invisible visible, she engages audiences in ways that both provoke thought and entertain.
Having begun her practice as a solo maker, her work has become increasingly collaborative, and is shaped by the artists who inspire and collaborate with her.
