Event description

Description

The Eyes Open Steering Group will be screening a series of films across the North East in the build up to World AIDS Day 2017, our aim is to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and challenge the stigma and discrimination people living with HIV experience.

The North Tyneside Event will show the Oscar winning 'Dallas Buyers Club' starring Matthew McConaughey (Academy Award for Best Actor) and Jared Leto (Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor). The film tells the story of Ron Woodroof, who was diagnosed with AIDS in the mid 1980s when HIV/AIDS treatments were under-researched, while the disease was not understood and highly stigmatized. As part of the experimental AIDS treatment movement, he smuggled unapproved pharmaceutical drugs into Texas for treating his symptoms, and distributed them to fellow people with HIV/AIDS by establishing the "Dallas Buyers Club". The film not only highlights the stigma & discrimination faced by people living with HIV but also challenges the stigma & discrimination faced by LGBT people.

After the film showing the audience will have an opportunity to engage in a discussion and direct questions to our panel of experts including HIV Consultants, HIV Charities, Eyes Open Steering Group Members and people who are living with HIV.

Dallas Buyers Club is rated 15
