The ethical questions around palliative care are often debated. Yet still, difficult questions are ignored, and it is often thought easier to simply care for people with terminal conditions, than to truly consider their preference over whether or not care, or euthanasia, is their first preference. WORLD WITHIN MY MIND considers these questions head-on, and none more strictly than the question of death. Thematically centred around Bach’s solo voice composition ‘Come, sweet death’, the film considers death not necessarily as an evil, but at times a mercy. Much though Sven continues to live his life, he does so almost in spite of those around him - his true wish continually rejected.

Shot within the confines of a single room, Krebs’s formal direction is designed so as to offer an insight into Sven’s world. While Christoph, Sven’s carer, can come and go, Sven is trapped in his bed, dreaming of a life he can no longer experience. While Krebs is sure to provide evidence that there are many meaningful experiences that those with Sven’s condition can engage in - Sven makes music, plays video games, and hosts parties, all from his mechanized bed - she is also keenly aware that sometimes, the wish for an end should be respected. A controversial ethical question, explored deftly. / Reviewed by Milo Garner
