The World Cinema Film Festival is a hybrid film event celebrating culture and community through a universal love of film online and IRL.

About this event

The World Cinema Film Festival will take place online from the 19th - 26th September, with tickets available in due course on www.bluebirdpictures.org/wcff and IRL on the 21st September and the 24 - 25 September at the Boathouse Creative Studios in Barking.

We will be operating this festival as an exhibition with two rooms of film showcases, pre-recorded masterclasses and an EXCLUSIVE VR experience using oculus quest headsets in association with the Independent Film Trust. ‘Coldharbour’ is a 360˚ oral history project that explores the history of Coldharbour Ward in Brixton, focusing on the market and Coldharbour Lane.

Our opening night on the 21st Septmeber will screen an EXCLUSIVE preview of French film Gagarine in association with Curzon Cinema. Gagarine, also known as Gagarin, is a 2020 French drama film directed by Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh, in their feature directorial debut. It centres around Cité Gagarine, a housing project in Ivry-sur-Seine, on the south of Paris, where the film was shot right before its demolition.

Our timeslots on the 24th - 25th September will be screening a selection of these showcases (so make sure you select the timeslot with the showcases you want to see) - You can also purchase our exclusive goody bags and cardboard VR headsets to enjoy at home for our online event or in real life.

The World is Changing showcase is a selection of short films that challenge our perception of the world both past, present and future. Featuring masterclasses with Concept Artist Po Sing Chu (Mission Impossible 8, Aquaman 2, The Matrix 4) Animator Alex Goddard (Vimeo, Buzzfeed, BFI) and Cinematographer Tim Cragg (Three Identical Strangers, One Strange Earth and Fear City: New York vs the Mafia)

The Best of World Cinema showcase is a selection of short films that explore stories from around the globe. Featuring masterclasses with writers Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek (Mulan, The Christmas Ball, Grace Hopper) Filmmaker Gary Thompson Founder of Cables and Cameras in Bristol and Casting Director Dan Hubbard (Hellboy, King Kong, Captain Philips)

Virual Reality is Virtually Here showcase is a selection of VR and 360 films that offer a unique insight into alternative filmmaking (Cardboard VR headsets available to purchase for our online version) featuring masterclasses with Taran Singh, the founder of Taran 3D and Michelle Adia Scarlett, a VR / 360 filmmaker.

Women's Voices showcase is a selection of short films shining a light of female and non-binary centric stories by female and non-binary filmmakers, selected by TAPE COLLECTIVE. Featuring masterclasses with Intimacy Co-ordinator Lizzy Talbot (Bridgerton) and Isra Al Kassi, co-founder of Tape Collective.

Young, Fresh 'n' Bold showcase is a selection of short films picked by youth led production company FULLY FOCUSED that explore what it's like 'Growing up in Britain.' Featuring masterclasses from filmmaker Tam Paul-Worika, who is currently working on a Sci-Fi web series, writer and director Runyararo Mapfumo (What's in a Name, The Uncertain Kingdom) and Tobi Kyeremateng an award-winning multidisciplinary producer and writer based in South Londo.
