Description

ABOUT KABANTU: The meaning behind Kabantu’s name is “of the people”, taken from the Zulu word “Ubuntu” translating as humanity; “I am what I am because of who we all are”. When it comes to their work within the community, that translates as a very inclusive approach to bringing music to others, from babies, special needs schools and children’s cancer wards to pre-conservatoire teenagers and the elderly. The spontaneous, joyous nature of Kabantu’s music, embracing improvisation, arrangement and different cultures, lends itself perfectly to using music to communicate with all.

OVERVIEW OF CONCERT: The concert is a trip around the world in an interactive format. The children discover the instruments of the Kabantu (violin, cello, guitar, double bass and percussion) and all the different sounds that these instruments are capable of, from animal noises to rock 'n' roll. The participatory elements of the concert includes everything from conducting to drum battles alongside the children experiencing incredible music from all over the globe. We have had fantastic feedback for this from other festivals including the British Museum, Swaledale, Greenbelt and Spitalfields that it is one of the best children's concerts their festivals has ever had.

CONCERT LENGTH: 1 hour long

TIMINGS: The concert starts promptly at 1pm. Schools will need to arrive by 12.30pm to be seated by 12.50pm at the latest.

COST: Attendance is FREE to children & young people at local Kent schools, and to accompanying staff and their parents. We very much encourage parents/carers to attend this concert for free, too, but they will have to be seated with the school and arrive with the school.

BOOKING: You will be asked to fill in a short booking form, which indicates exactly how many young people, staff and parents/carers will be attending. We will need this in advance of the concert, and cannot guarantee space if you turn up unexpectedly on the day. We are limiting each school to bring only one class, in order that other schools can benefit from the concert.

TARGET YEAR GROUP: KS1 & KS2 (please be in touch if you'd like to book a KS3 group)

GETTING THERE: We advise that you attend the concert from your school via walking bus as there is limited parking locally.

NOTE ABOUT THE AUDIENCE: The concert is also open to the general public, so please be aware of this in advance. We need to ensure that all children are accompanied by your school staff at all times (to toilets, and so on) and that they need to be on their very best behaviour throughout (of which we have no doubt that they will be, of course!).

REFRESHMENTS: As the concert is over the lunchtime period, you are welcome to bring your school class to have a picnic on the Church grounds prior to the concert. Please ensure that children bring a bottle of water or squash with them into the concert.
