Event Details

A cultural evening of poetry and perfomance promoting a better understanding of why people seek sanctuary

Featuring:

- Youth Poetry Slam
Competition winners battle it out with live readings of their own poems

- Asibi Asibi: Girl Stolen
A true story about trafficking performed by a local playwright

This event is being held as part of Refugee Week. Refugee Week began in 1998 as a direct reaction to the hostility that was reflected in the media and society in general towards refugees and asylum seekers. This event seeks to promote a better understanding of why people seek sanctuary and raise awareness of the realities of refugee experiences through showcasing local talent.

Organiser

British Red Cross

The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.

Refugee Service

The British Red Cross has a long tradition of providing practical and emotional support to asylum seekers and refugees. It helps people adapt to life in the UK by giving information about the city they are in. It also provides short-term help to those who have little money for food, clothes, toiletries and housing.

Youth and Schools Service

The Youth and Schools team seek to raise awareness about humanitarian issues key to the work of the Red Cross through assemblies, workshops, resources and projects such as the poetry competition. They also offer first aid education to children and young people.
