About this Event
Celebrated annually on 2 February, World Wetlands Day aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. This year's theme shines a spotlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss.
Come and join guest speaker Ian Crump, Biodiversity Field Officer for Thames Water, for a talk about freshwater habitats, their management, uses as vital sources of supply and habitats for a wide range of species, to celebrate World Wetlands Day 2021.
Hosted via Zoom, details to join will be shared the day before the event.
Europe’s largest urban wetland reserve, Walthamstow Wetlands, is a fully operational 211 hectare Thames Water reservoir site which is the main source of water supply for 3.5 million people. Walthamstow Wetlands is also an internationally important nature reserve, providing home and shelter to a wide range of wildlife.
In October 2017, Walthamstow Wetlands opened to the wider public for the first time in 150 year due to a partnership between Thames Water, landowner, London Borough of Waltham Forest, grant holder, and London Wildlife Trust, the conservation delivery partner with support from Heritage Lottery Fund and other partners.
