World Wetlands Day: Wetlands of the world with Pete Salter
Event Information
About this Event
Celebrated annually on 2 February, World Wetlands Day aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. This year's theme shines a spotlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss.
Join Walthamstow Wetlands visitor engagement ranger, Pete, for a talk on wetlands around the world, the life they support, the ecosystem services they provide and why they are worth protecting and restoring.
Hosted via Zoom, details to join will be shared the day before the event.
Europe’s largest urban wetland reserve, Walthamstow Wetlands, is a fully operational 211 hectare Thames Water reservoir site which is the main source of water supply for 3.5 million people. Walthamstow Wetlands is also an internationally important nature reserve, providing home and shelter to a wide range of wildlife.
In October 2017, Walthamstow Wetlands opened to the wider public for the first time in 150 year due to a partnership between Thames Water, landowner, London Borough of Waltham Forest, grant holder, and London Wildlife Trust, the conservation delivery partner with support from Heritage Lottery Fund and other partners.
