About this event
Join us for a cooking workshop where we will be learning to make tang yuan, a Chinese and Vietnamese dessert that is often eaten as a symbol of family togetherness and union in celebration of Lunar New Year.
Tang yuan (Chinese: 湯圓 / Viet: Sủi dìn / bánh trôi nước) is a glutinous rice dumpling dessert served in a sweet hot broth. In Chinese, the dumplings are translated as “soup balls”, or as "floating water cakes" from Vietnamese. As we make the dessert, we will be sharing stories and recipes that express what togetherness and family mean to you. We will also be learning origami whilst listening to a playlist of music that engages with themes of migration, identity, belonging and, of course, food!
This workshop is led by World Wide Wontons (WWW), a project of stories, recipes and practices that was initiated by Annie Jael Kwan, Cuong Pham and Howl Yuan from Asia-Art-Activism. It centres food as politics and opens up discussions around migration, identity, and belonging.
This workshop will begin at 15:30 and take place in The Box. The Box will be open from 15:00 if you would like to settle before the workshop starts.
