Event description
Discover the story behind this chocolate box village - the cradle of the industrial revolution & all because a Duke fell out of love.

About this Event

Today's visitor sees Worsley as a "chocolate box pretty" village with village green, half-timbered Tudor buildings, a pleasant canalside location (with peculiarly orange water) and gateway to the new RHS Bridgewater Garden opening in 2021.

A little over a century ago, Worsley was dirty, noisy, smelly and not exactly a des res destination. Nobody would want to come unless they really had to.

If you join Elizabeth Charnley, Green Badge guide for the Bridgewater Canal, on Saturday 5th December you will walk in the footsteps of royalty, see a scheduled ancient monument (so it makes Worsley just as important to the world as Stonehenge,) find out what happened to the waifs & strays of Manchester and a national scandal regarding the alphabet.

Hear stories of a Duke who was supposedly the richest man in the country begging for money, an errant elephant and how you could have had the opportunity to do one of Sir Tony Robinson's "worst jobs in history." And how you were spared from one of the other worst jobs by order of Queen Victoria herself, but only until you were 10.....
