About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 45 minutes

Write from the Art

We'll explore the Graves Gallery to look at some artworks together as the starting point for a series of themed prompts and exercises to inspire your thinking and writing.

Whether you can't remember the last time you picked up a pen or you're a well-practice scribbler, you'll enjoy this friendly, stimulating approach to generating new writing. Join us to try out new ideas and write some sentences that only you can write.

Suitable for anyone who enjoys words in company - talking with them, exploring what they mean and writing them down.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but your willingness to join in with looking, thinking and writing. If you have a favourite notebook and pen, or a device you prefer to write on, then bring those. But all resources will be provided.

Do I need to know about philosophy and art and creative writing?

Not at all! This workshop will be suitable for anyone who likes looking at art, talking about ideas and trying out writing some words.

Will I have to speak with other people or read out my writing?

No-one has to do anything they're not comfortable with. Rosie facilitates in a friendly and accessible way that makes everyone feel included. "This was a great, light-hearted way to play with creative writing and build confidence in finding new ways to generate writing ideas."

Where will we meet?

We'll meet in the Graves Gallery Activity Room, on the 2nd floor of the Central Library building on Surrey Street. Then we'll go up to the gallery on the third floor to look at some art together. Returning to the Activity Room, we'll have time for thinking, talking and writing.

Who is the facilitator?

Rosie Carnall is passionate about using artworks as inspiration for creativity. She's an Associate with the Writers Workshop, Sheffield and also facilitates the regular Sharing the View: philosophy in the gallery sessions in the Graves Gallery. She has an MA in Creative Writing from SHU.
