Event description

Description

Write Your Voice Through Poetry Workshops happen Monday afternoons 12 - 2pm, at Storyhouse, Chester. We are a fun and friendly group which is for anyone wanting to explore the potential of personal writing for one’s health and well-being, be that finding your writing voice or voicing your thoughts through writing poetry.

We are a drop-in/pay as you go session (£2.00 per person each week) where activities flow to kindle creativity and enrich our well-being. Every workshop is different and follows different themes utilising our wonderful surroundings for inspiration, thus creating a relaxed and accessible environment for the new writer, and creative experience for the regular writer.

So how can writing poetry be therpeutic and who will be running the sessions?

Have you ever noticed how some people breeze through life, rarely blown off course no matter what hits them? Others struggle with the storms of change and flounder on the rocks of life, and in the middle there’s us. Us, travellers through life trying our hardest to cope with change. Us, with sails and rigging in place (just) whilst unbeknownst to others inside there is a heaving mass of thought and emotions that often distract us.

Creative writing was my way of escaping to a more silent and calm space. Putting pen to paper can be daunting, especially when processing one’s own thoughts, however for me it released pressures from inside and has become so much more than therapeutic writing. I always rhymed in my head as a troubled child, then when attending University at the grand old age of 43, I discovered I was dyslexic. Luckily I was a student on a counselling course and was encouraged to process this new diagnosis through poetry, so for the first time, I wrote my voice.

Since then I have started a blog (Nicola Grace Poetry) and met some wonderful people. We started to communicate through poetry, playing games and using a single word or picture to hang a poem off. It was suggested to me that I blow the dust off my adult teaching certificate I gained back in the day and endeavour to spread the word.

The effect of writing ones voice on a person’s mental well-being astounds me every day. I have seen people laugh, cry and everything in between, however the most important thing I have witnessed is people’s ability to process their pain. Through finding their voice, improving their mental well-being and ultimately disarming their inner critic, they find a solution, and just go for it!!

So why not come set sail with me, bring your imperfections as this is what makes us creative, remember we are all flaw-some and above all else pack your lifebuoy named Compassion, something we often give to others but not so readily to ourselves. No previous knowledge is needed, just a desire to write and discover where words might lead you. We enjoy discussing our responses to activities that said, you do not have to share what you have written unless you wish. I will not be teaching you to write, you can already do this but I will help prompt you in a safe and happy surrounding.
