SPARK YOUR INSPIRATION AND EMBARK ON A PHILOSOPHICAL AND INTROSPECTIVE WRITING JOURNEY.

No writing or philosophy knowledge or experience necessary.

This ongoing monthly therapeutic/expressive writing group at Orchard Square is for anyone who enjoys (or thinks they might enjoy) writing for pleasure or to spark inspiration.

Using prose excerpts, poetry, images and other prompts, this group invites you to explore your inner and outer worlds through writing, with the aim of deepening self-understanding and self-connection . Sharing your writing is always optional but the invitation is there to share and discuss your writing or discoveries with others.

The aim of the workshop is to help you to tap into your inner wisdom in order to improve the quality of your life in terms of enhancing its meaning and enjoyment. (While it's not the purpose of the workshop, some participants also find that it enhances aspects of their fiction and non-fiction writing life too (especially memoir writing)).

The facilitator, Emma Garrard, is a Biblio/Poetry Therapist with over 20 years' experience facilitating groups, who will safely and expertly guide you through the writing process.

What you will need: You don't need to bring anything but do feel free to bring preferred writing materials. Participants often have a journal for these sessions that they use every time, to contain all their hard won wisdom in one place!

Accessibility statement: The Writers Workshop’s space in Orchard Square, Sheffield, has no step-free access. If you have been excluded from this event due to inaccessibility, please let us know. We are committed to finding fully accessible premises and, in the meantime, making as many of our events available online as possible.

Please note: these workshops are for adults aged 18 and over. Refunds are only available up to 7 days before the event. Teas, coffees, oatmilk and vegan cookies are provided (you are allowed to bring your own refreshments too).

The Writers Workshop is a nonprofit social enterprise on a mission to enable everyone to experience the joy and power of creative writing, both at our venue in Sheffield and online. Frequently asked questions

Is this an ongoing group?

Yes. Each workshop works as a stand-alone event but there is a series of them, each taking place on the first Thursday of the month between 6.30pm-8pm.

Does this group also run online?

Not at the moment but if you’d like to register your interest in an online version of the group, this may be something that is available in the future.

Why do we need to tap into our inner wisdom?

Wisdom is key for happiness, fulfilment, meaning, personal growth, good relationships and life decisions. We can draw from the wisdom of others but when we do that, ultimately what we’re doing is finding a resonance with our own inner knowing, and that is how we recognise a truth and a way forward.

How do you become wise through writing?

As Flannery O’Connor once said: “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” Therapeutic creative writing prompts enable us to access our truths via the “back door”, in other words unconsciously, bypassing some of the filters and cognitive obstacles that can get in our way!

Do I need to have some previous experience in creative writing, therapy or philosophy?

No at all. Everyone has inner wisdom and the word “philosophy” translates as “love of wisdom”, so that is all that is required. Therapeutic creative writing is more about content and process than product. We are looking at what insights your writing reveals rather than your writing ability.

Is this a therapy group?

No. The hope is that participants will gain therapeutic benefit from the workshops but this is not a therapy group and there is never a requirement to share your writing or how you are feeling if that’s not right for you.

What sort of themes will be explored in the workshops?

Wisdom is key to navigating all areas of life/the human experience, so the themes are endless really, but to name a few: love, meaning, community, identity, hope, spirituality, freedom, impermanence and loss.

Where can I find out more about the facilitator?

Emma Garrard is a philosophy graduate, a Biblio/Poetry therapist and a psychotherapist. She trained with the International Academy for Poetry Therapy and now offers a range of therapeutic creative writing groups to promote well-being. You can find out more about Emma here: www.wordsforwellness.co.uk

Where is the workshop taking place?

In Workshop 14, above Costa Coffee in Orchard Square. Take the external stairs from the centre of Orchard Square (between the entrances to Waterstones and Costa Coffee) and turn right at the top. Enter second door (double doors) on left and then it's the first door on the left.
