Description

TUESDAY EVENINGS 6.30pm to 8.30pm for 10 weeks

Start date: Tuesday 9 January 2018 End date: Tuesday 13 March 2018

COST: £195.00

By popular demand, we are running a shorter term, weekly version of our hugely successful TV scriptwriting course this term.

Want to learn the ins and outs of writing for the episodic TV market? Got an idea for a new TV series or serial? This course is intended for writers who want to develop original ideas and scripts specifically for television. The course will take place weekly on Tuesday evenings for ten weeks.

Students should come ready to write and try out different formats - all in a supportive workshop environment.

By the end of the 10 weeks, students will have all the skills they need to then write up their own original scripts ready to be presented to series commissioners, and ready for schemes such as the annual Red Planet Prize, the Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award and BBCWritersroom.

We will cover:

  • The structure of modern scripted television (series, serials and sitcoms)
  • How episodic storytelling works
  • Plotting long-form storylines
  • Maintaining dramatic tension and conflict in episodic storytelling (students will learn how to write effective TV episode scripts)
  • Writing great dialogue and visuals for the TV screen
  • Writing and revising the screenplay
  • Writing the treatment proposal for an original television idea
  • Advice on approaching commissioners and agents

Classes will be a combination of tutor led workshop, lots of writing, reading of work, and peer critique. You must be willing to do your own writing inside and outside of the classroom meetings.

Classes will take place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Tuesday evenings.

Who’s the course for?

Writers keen to learn the craft of telling stories over more than one episode; TV writers keen to polish their script skills; Script Editors, Script Developers interested in understanding how stories are created and strapped across a TV series length; anyone working in the industry that needs to know more about storytelling and how to structure story ideas.

Tutor:

Douglas Dougan began his career writing for series television at BBC, Channel Five & ITV (Casualty, Family Affairs, Doctors, River City, The Bill, Kingdom). In 2006, he set up Fluid Eye Productions, an independent production company based in Edinburgh. Among their credits are the BAFTA award-winning Run, Tony, Run! and BBC Three Award winner Mono. He has also created the CITV series Zoe’s Point of View. Douglas works regularly as a script editor and script consultant on UK film and television productions including the multi-BAFTA award winning dramas Margaret, Small Island, Five Minutes of Heaven, Occupation, Sex ‘n’ Drugs ‘n’ Rock & Roll and '71.
