Description

Join Dr Jill Liddington for a talk about Anne Lister of Shibden Hall (1791-1840) at this event celebrating Norwich Pride and the Desire, love, identity: exploring LGBTQ histories exhibition.

How do you write about a woman who has already written a four-million-word diary? About a woman whose every letter artfully re-presents the truth?

BBC1's new drama series, Gentleman Jack, tells the remarkable story of Anne Lister of Shibden Hall (1791-1840). Anne was a scholar and traveller, a landowner and a lesbian. Her compelling diaries run to over four million words, one-sixth written in her own private code, recording in vivid detail her affairs with other women. And now, from 2011, these riveting journals are included by UNESCO in the Memory of the World Register, alongside diarist Samuel Pepys.

Anne Lister inherited Shibden, Halifax in 1826. She returned home from her exotic travels in May 1832 despondent ~ betrayed by yet one more woman's marriage plans. She determined to remake shabby Shibden so it would match her landed-gentry ambitions. And she determined to find herself a life partner. Chance re-acquaintance with neighbouring heiress Ann Walker would change her life forever. She reshaped the Shibden landscape to seduce this wealthy young woman ~ all out of sight of Halifax's prying eyes.

Everyone approaching the Anne Lister diaries with a glint in their eye gets quickly defeated. Reading over four million words and deciphering the coded sections is totally daunting. In 1990s feminist historian Jill Liddington, living in Halifax just a mile from Shibden, began work on Anne's 1830s diaries. Although people knew about the younger Anne Lister, they were startled by Jill's editions of the diaries. Here was a woman developing her own coal mines. And in 1834, at the church communion rail, joining Anne Walker 'in my prayers', Anne's marriage ceremony.
