Overview

This workshop provides the knowledge and practical guidelines needed to identify and write e­ffective and accurate user stories. A focus of the workshop is how to write user stories that deliver business value and yet remain achievable/deliverable over a sprint period. Identifying risks, dependencies and technical challenges associated with the stories is covered.

Attendees will learn how to

  • Write effective user stories that meet the INVEST criteria
  • Break large stories into deliverable units
  • Define clear acceptance criteria
  • Estimate the time a story will take
  • Handle non-functional requirement

Overview

This course is suitable for who want to become more effective at defining their product requirements with user stories and product backlogs. The assumption is attendees have an understanding of Scrum/Agile and want to improve the way that requirements are represented with clear user stories.


Workshop Approach

Taught material will be delivered in short, focused sessions and will be followed by the opportunity to practice what has been taught and reflect on how to put it into practice.

Workshop Content

User Story Basics

  • The structure and content of user stories.
  • The Three Cs concept of user stories: Card, Conversation, Confirmation.
  • Improving the quality of user stories: effective user stories and the INVEST criteria.

Managing User Stories

  • User Story Mapping: techniques for organising user stories at different levels of detail.
  • Right-sized stories: different size stories for different purposes and audiences.
  • Recording and supporting the conversations with words and pictures.

Testing and Acceptance Criteria

  • Turning aspects of stories into story tests.
  • Confirming when the story is done.

Planning and Estimating with Stories

  • Estimation of stories: the importance of the right size for estimation.
  • Managing risks with deadlines.
  • Using spikes to deal with unknowns and uncertainties.

User Stories and Beyond

  • Handling non-functional requirements and cross-cutting concerns.
  • Allowing time for other activities: don’t force everything into stories.

Changing and Improving the Process

  • Making the best use of feedback loops, adaptive planning and learning.
