Event description

Description

All professional artists have to work with the written word throughout their careers, and often writing becomes an important element that shapes an artist’s practice and career. Whether it’s writing or collaborating on press releases, writing reviews or getting your own work reviewed, whether you are applying for funding or you need to write your artist statement, this workshop is designed to help you write about your work more effectively. You'll look at different types of contemporary writing on art. You'll analyse excerpts of writings by artists, critics and creative writers to investigate what makes their writing compelling or informative. Our aim will be to begin producing extracts of writing that capture the spirit of our ideas through a series of hands-on writing activities and group discussions.

The session will be led by Lizzie Lloyd. Based in Bristol, Lizzie is an art writer, historian, and educator. She has facilitated specialist art writing workshops – designed for students, practitioners and industry professionals. She has contributed to Art Monthly, artnet, Art Review, Journal of Contemporary Painting among other art magazines and journals. Her writing has commissioned to appear alongside the work of artists such as Katie Paterson, Ben Owen, Hannah Murgatroyd, and Tim Knowles and been commissioned by galleries such as Plymouth College of Art, KARST, Exeter Phoenix, Hestercombe Gallery, UH Gallery, and Bridport Museum among others.

If you have any particular topics or issues you'd like covered during the session, you can e-mail them to enquiries@cultivatorcornwall.org.uk to be passed on to Lizzie.
