Event: Writing for Wellbeing & Personal Development for Caring Professions

Workshop 2 : A journey in compassion

Writing for Wellbeing (also known as therapeutic writing), is an evidence-based, low cost, portable tool for maintaining our wellbeing and personal development. Each workshop will introduce you to writing as a tool for wellbeing and personal development using techniques drawn from creative writing, expressive writing, reflective writing, journalling and poetry therapy, that you can apply across your professional and personal life.

These workshops are designed specifically for those who care and support others in their professional work, including healthcare professionals, social workers, care workers, therapists, counsellors, coaches, educators and students in any of these fields.

These themed workshops aim to provide a safe, confidential space within a small group (minimum 2 people, maximum 8), to explore your personal and professional experiences where you will be invited to explore how you can care for yourself as well as those you care for, through tailored writing exercises and reflective discussion as a community.

No specialist experience of writing is needed, just a spirit of curiosity, a notebook and pen/something to write with.

Testimonials from previous Storied Selves workshops for Caring Professions (2021/22):

  • 'Compassion begins at home'

"Thank you for a very fruitful morning; the size of the group made the session very focussed and personal for me. I felt very safe and affirmed in writing practice as a process. I will certainly look at future workshops and the conference upcoming. Thank you Roshni"

"The workshop exceeded my expectations

"I look forward to joining the next one (workshop)!"

  • 'Finding your voice, being heard'

"I loved the session, it was brilliant! I wish it was longer so we could share more, and explore more each other's perceptions during the exercises. It was a great first time!"

"Great content and ideas. Very inclusive and supportive. Good experience."

  • 'Celebrating our differences'

"Provided a great opportunity to engage in a creative process in a supportive environment. I generally struggle to share anything I've written/drawn etc. but felt totally safe to do so in the group. It was liberating and life-affirming! A spark has been lit and I may well share what came through in the session - what a wonderful, joyful surprise. Thank you Roshni!"

'Exploring identity'

"Would highly recommend Roshni's workshops for anyone that enjoys or would like to try creative writing as a way of looking after themselves, exploring their feelings and thoughts etc. I could have not loved the identity workshop more. Felt inspired and connected."

"It was pleasure meeting Roshni and I really felt energised. Really felt motivated and inspired listening to her and others. Thank you and keep up the good work"

  • Change: obstacle or opportunity?

I really enjoyed the focused facilitation that came with this 1:1 session. I was able to be more open in my discussions than I would have been if other writers had been there, particularly around discussion points about which I feel vulnerable and sensitive. Having a 1:1 session meant that the time was dedicated to me rather than being shared with others.I liked the fact that the session could be adjusted according to what came up as I wrote/chatted. I thought that pace was just right. A 1:1 session means that the writing and discussion sections can be adjusted according to one's own progress so that worked really well, particularly because it was 1:1. I would have felt a little more inhibited in a group session and probably wouldn't have discussed some of the things that we talked about if it had been a group session (NB 1:1 are offered as an alternative to refunds if you are the sole person booked on a workshop, as aforementioned).
