This Government has committed to strong foundations in reading and writing for all children. Leaders need to understand the key messages in the writing framework, DfE and Ofsted expectations on writing over the coming academic year, and what their next steps should be.

What is the writing framework?

The writing framework, published by the Department for Education in July 2025, is evidence-based guidance for all primary school leaders and teaching staff. This non-statutory guidance gives simple, practical advice about how to teach writing in reception, key stage 1 and key stage 2.
