About this event

This two hour workshop will be led by The Craft House’s creative writing tutor, Alyson Faye.*

It is suitable for beginners and those with more writing experience, who wish to move their fiction to another level and begin submitting to markets.

In this workshop we will explore what defines a ghost story, the rules of the genre, and look at examples of memorable ghost stories e.g. M R James, Poe, Susan Hill, and Michelle Paver.

We will work from visual prompts and do fun writing exercises to get your story under way, as well as talk about how to build atmosphere, how to structure your story, (the story arc), writing the ‘hook’ to keep a reader, and writing that satisfying ending.

Alyson will give tips for self-editing, and also suggest some markets for story submissions. There will be printouts to take away, along with a list of recommended writing sites and blogs.

She will lead the exercises and provide the resources. Just bring paper/pen or laptop to write with.

Price is £25 per person.

The Craft House was established in 2016 in Saltaire by April Chamberlain, who continues to manage the business. Having started in Saltaire, The Craft House is now run from new, larger, premises at 109-111 Main Street, Bingley. We have a lovely ground floor cafe and welcoming workshop spaces on the first floor (reached by stairs with two handrails). We offer a vibrant programme of art, craft and textile workshops and courses for adults, enabling you to develop existing skills as well as try new activities. Working closely with a team of talented artist/maker tutors, we provide expertly-run classes in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cater for a range of skill levels, from first-time participants to people with existing skills (including other professional artists and makers looking to develop their techniques). Our emphasis is on encouraging creativity and enjoyment whilst passing on key skills. We also cater for private parties and events - please telephone us or call into the cafe to discuss. Please note that all our events are subject to us achieving minimum booking requirements, as we need to ensure they are commercially viable for our tutors - if we have to cancel an event, we will refund your ticket and give you as much notice as possible.
