Think of ghost stories, and you might think of white ladies in swirling fog, or women in black stalking through atmospheric graveyards. Or perhaps you think of the haunted house, a real estate site of horrors that has you rethinking the nightmare that was applying for a mortgage.
But ghost stories once had a far broader range of available characters, with recognisable 'types' appearing in tales across Britain (in particular). How about the treasure-hunting ghost, who cannot rest until someone finds their hoard? Or the phantom coach, careering through the darkness on specific nights and terrifying anyone who ventures out? And then there's the fortune-telling ghost who appears at an opportune moment, to pass on a prophecy that will help the listener, if only they heed it...
This workshop will explore these types of ghost and their associated folklore, even if they've fallen out of fashion, to help you generate ideas for new tales that expand the ghost story into far broader territory. Besides, who doesn't like a ghost who can make you rich?!
