Writing Horror with Ian Long
Overview
Horror is a perennially popular genre which filmmakers can use to talk about all the things that animate other genres, but in truly cinematic ways that have great creative potential and the prospect of communicating to big audiences. It seems that at some level, we need the things that horror offers us. But why? We'll ponder some of the answers.
Content: We’ll see how, by making fears concrete, Horror intensifies the visual and cinematic quality of stories, increasing stakes, heightening emotions and ensuring strong audience engagement. We’ll see how Horror antagonists embody emotions like rage, grief or fear, and look for new variations on the characters, scenarios and ideas which constitute the genre. The workshop will help you think through Horror in fresh, creative ways.
About the tutor: Ian Long is a writer and story consultant. His current writing projects are a neo noir set in London, a set of experimental short stories and a supernatural feature set in rural Italy. His psychological thriller Stargazer, co-written with Luxembourgish director Christian Neuman, is due to be released later this year. Previous screenwriting commissions include an epic animated feature for Oscar-winning animator Gabriele Zucchelli and a horror feature for the late Johnny Kevorkian. Ian has consulted for the UK Film Council's Premiere and New Cinema Funds, the First Film Foundation, the Script Factory and many other bodies, film companies and producers. Ian teaches workshops in Deep Narrative Design, Creating Fear in Films, Writing Science Fiction, Writing Horror, Writing Neo Noir, and a course in Script Reading and Assessment. He has taken his workshops to Finland, Latvia and Estonia and elsewhere. Ian heads Euroscript's Consultancy and Feedback services.
