'How Much to Tell? The Dilemmas of Writing Memoir' Tuesday 23rd May 2017
Ink Academy Author Masterclasses
Writing memoir can be cathartic, necessary, even urgent. But it also requires confronting difficult emotional truths and revealing much that is personal to you – and, more controversially, to the people in your life.
How much do you tell, and where do you draw the line? Do you have a responsibility to write truthfully – or does your responsibility lie in protecting the real-life characters who appear in your story?
Lu Spinney, author of Beyond the High Blue Air (Atlantic), discusses with you and a small group of others how she wrote her searing and courageous memoir. She helps you address the doubts and challenges you might encounter when writing your own life story – and equips you with the practical tools necessary to make your own decisions about how much to share and how much to withold.
'A work of the highest literary skill and heroic courage' – John Sutherland
'An eloquent, heart-breakingly well-written record of a mother's loss' – Francis Spufford
'Profoundly moving and grippingly readable' – The Sunday Times
'A devastating, important memoir' – Cathy Rentzenbrink
Ink Masterclasses provide the opportunity, in an intimate group of fellow writers, to learn practical elements of the craft of writing and benefit from the perspective and experience of a published author. Each Masterclass will focus on a particular theme – memoir, say, or characterisation, or plot – but also on the author’s personal experience: what they find most challenging, most helpful and most rewarding about their career. The Masterclasses are interactive: you can expect to take part in engaging discussion in an unpressured environment. You will come away equipped with practical tools to apply to your own writing, and a real insight into the process of finding an agent and getting published.
