Inner Visions

A night of music and writing inspired by music, featuring Mbira player Linos Wengara Magaya, historian Colin Grant, who will be reading from his book, I&I:  The Natural Mystics - Marley, Tosh and Wailer, the first group biography of The Wailers and Chinese Jamaican poet Hannah Lowe, author of debut collection Chick (Bloodaxe), who will be reading new poems about jazz.

Benjie's Caribbean Kitchen's will be selling plates of Caribbean food and drinks will be on sale on the night. FREE wine tasting from Barefoot Wines.

There's no place like home: creative writing workshops

Free one-hour creative writing workshops with Indian author and storyteller Umi Sinha. The workshops will help participants tell stories, their own or fiction, around the themes of home and displacement.

Poetry workshop with Patience Agbabi

Come learn the art and craft and poetry of one of the UK's finest poets. 

Patience Agbabi’s poems have been broadcast on television and radio all over the world. Her work has also appeared on the London Underground and human skin. In 2004 she was nominated one of the UK’s Next Generation Poets.

She is the author of three poetry collections, R.A.W. (Gecko Press, 1995),Transformatrix (Canongate Books, 2000) and Bloodshot Monochrome (Canongate Books, 2008). Canterbury Copy, her retelling of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, will be published by Canongate in 2014.

She has lectured in Creative Writing at several UK universities including Greenwich, Cardiff and Kent. She is currently a Fellow in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes University.

 Mother Tongue

An evening of some of the South East's finest poets, rappers & storytellers. With acclaimed poet Patience Agbabi and Mrisi Shrapnel, Spliff Richard, plus authors from the Ink on My Lips anthology, soon to be published on Brighton-based Waterloo Press.

LATIN VOICES LIVE! FAMILY DAY - Luis Muñoz

We are honoured to have Luis Muñoz, a former Chilean activist who survived arrest and torture during Pinochet’s regime and authored this harrowing account of his life in his autobiography Being Luis; A Chilean Life (Impress Books).

Luis will read from his book at Jubilee Library, during the Latin Voices Live! Family Day event and answer questions from the audience. Luis will be signing copies of the book, which will be on sale. Tickets for the reading are £5/3 and include a complimentary glass of wine.

Writing masterclass with Jacob Ross Pt 2

Following on from Jacob's recent workshop in Brighton, in this next workshop Jacob will be build on the work he did to examine the building blocks of stories and narrative and give participants opportunities to produce strong memorable narratives with practical exercises in the class.

Inscribe co-director and SABLE LitMag publisher, Kadija George will present you with the basics needed to organise and strategise your time, so you can more effectively find and select the most appropriate magazines, journals, and anthologies to submit to. You will feel energised, motivated and confident of there being an outlet out there that wants your words.

Acclaimed Caribbean author and short story writer Jacob Ross is joining us for a special evening at The Old Market. As well as reading from his work and talking about his life as a writer, Jacob will also be in discussion with 3 Sussex authors about creativity, inspiration and the state of publishing for Black authors.  

Jacob Ross is the author of acclaimed short story collections, Song for Simone (1986) and A Way to Catch the Dust (1999). His first novel, Pynter Bender was shortlisted for the Authors Club Best First Novel Award 2009 and the Commonwealth Writers Prize 2009. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has judged the V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize, the Tom-Gallon Award and Scott Moncrieff Translation Prize. Jacob is also the Associate Fiction Editor for Peepal Tree Press and a tutor of Narrative Craft and the Fiction Editor for SABLE LitMag.

WRITE: Writing masterclass with Jacob Ross

The workshop is for writers who want to  maximise the quality and impact of their work. At the end of the workshop you will  have a better awareness of your own strengths and weakness as a writer and the steps you need to take to address them. We will examine the building blocks of stories and how they work together to produce strong memorable narratives.

Writing Our Legacy

Writing Our Legacy is an unincorporated association whose aim is to raise awareness of the contributions of Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) writers, poets, playwrights and authors born, living or connected to Sussex.* We were established in April 2012.

(*We employ Mosaic’s definition of BME to be ‘Black people’ and ‘mixed-parentage people’ including all those people whose ancestral origins are African, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Middle Eastern, North African, Romany, and the indigenous peoples of the South Pacific islands, the American continents, Australia and New Zealand.)

Writing Our Legacy is part of Brighton & Hove Black History Month, a year-long programme of events celebrating the contributions that black and ethnic minority people have made to the city. 

Black History month focuses on the history of Asian, African and African Caribbean people. 

Since October 1987, many communities and organisations in the UK have celebrated Black History month in October, with activities such as lectures, conferences, concerts, dedicated web pages and specialist activities in the community, schools and libraries.

Brighton & Hove Black History Month invites everyone irrespective of race to join in the fun, social and educational multicultural activities that aim to bring people in Brighton & Hove and across Sussex together. 

The programme is supported by a dedicated group of about 20 volunteers, how help to bring activities and events together, not just for October, but for also the rest of the year.
