Event Overview: Writing Ourselves for the Stage – OILCAN Feeder Workshop (Session 2)
Continue your creative journey with Writing Ourselves for the Stage, the second in a three part series of inspiring workshops feeding into OILCAN – the musical, a bold new production blending Scottish storytelling with contemporary rap and song.
In this two-hour session, you’ll explore how to turn personal stories into compelling scripts for the stage. Through fun and supportive exercises, we’ll cover the basics of playwriting: crafting dialogue, shaping character, and using dramatic structure to bring ideas to life. Whether you're brand new to writing or already exploring your voice, this workshop offers practical tools, creative inspiration, and a welcoming space to express yourself.
You’ll work with experienced facilitators in a relaxed, inclusive environment, gaining writing techniques you can take forward into your own projects. You’ll also get a taste of what’s to come in Session 3: Rapping up! where we will consolidate our writing and look at how to get involved with OILCAN - The Musical
About the Musical
OILCAN - the musical is a bold and innovative musical blending contemporary rap with traditional Scottish airs. Power, identity, and community leadership are all explored. Developed through collaborative workshops, the musical amplifies unheard voices, telling the stories of communities facing political and social challenges.
At its core, OILCAN – the musical is a platform for creative expression, where participants contribute ideas, lyrics, and scripts that may shape the final production.
About the Workshop Series
This hands-on creative series blends playwriting, songwriting, and performance to introduce the core skills behind musical theatre writing.
By attending all three sessions, you'll have the skills and confidence to write your own musical!
This workshop also offers a unique chance to explore storytelling through music with opportunities to get professionally published.

This workshop is ideal for anyone based in Scotland, aged 16+ and interested in creative writing, songwriting, theatre-making, or storytelling – whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced artist looking for fresh inspiration, this is for you!
Nope! All levels of experience are welcome. This is a relaxed, supportive space to try things out, get creative, and work collaboratively.
You’ll take part in creative games and exercises around playwriting, songwriting, and performance. You’ll explore how musicals are built and start developing your own ideas – maybe even contributing material that could be featured in OILCAN itself.
There will be optional sharing opportunities, but there’s no pressure to perform if that’s not your thing.
