Description

Writing Retreats

Dr Grace D Poulter is a senior lecturer in Academic Writing at Glasgow Caledonian University. Dr Poulter is also an accredited IELTS examiner with many years of experience in teaching EAP to postgraduate students in the Scottish HE sector.

The Graduate School Writing Retreats have been designed to help final year research students and research staff get to grips with writing, by giving you the space and opportunity – away from the distractions of everyday life.

Please come prepared:

  • to focus upon a single issue for which you have 4 discrete sections that you will write about in each of the sessions

  • or with 4 short topics that you will complete in each of the sessions

  • or with 4 activities that will take you through the 4 sessions on a single topic/piece of writing, e.g. 1. Write, 2. Redraft, 3. Edit, 4. Format and finesse final version.

Of course, no one will be checking what you write, so this is just a guideline, but you should bear in mind that the main purpose of the day is writing as an activity, not research and not reading – these are separate activities for different days.

Please note: These workshops are for GCU staff and GCU final year research students only.

N.B. Please bring your own laptop.

If need to use a university machine, these can be borrowed, by prior arrangement with The Base at:

http://www.gcu.ac.uk/library/usingthelibrary/borrowing/

There are different arrangements for staff at:

http://www.gcu.ac.uk/staff/it/hardware/borrowing/

This workshop corresponds to domain B of the Vitae Researcher Development Framework.

For more information please email the Graduate School at graduateschool@gcu.ac.uk
