Event description

Description

Mondays (for 8 weeks) 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Start date: Monday 15 January 2018 End date: Monday 5 March 2018

Graphic novels and comicbooks are now as mainstream as novels, film and television. They demand strong storytelling, great visuals and a limitless imagination. Following on from our introductory course last year, award-winning comics writer Emma Beeby returns to Skriva with an advanced workshop series aimed at getting you writing your own comics and graphic novel projects for a target of existing market opportunities – for example a FutureShock to submit to 2000AD (4 pages), the first pages of an original graphic novel, or the first episodes for a new web comic.

This is a practical-led course that will develop your writing skills over eight weeks. Lots of opportunities to write, class exercises, and a chance to read and feedback on the group’s work.

Course programme

Week 1: Introduction

  • Some history of comics and graphic novels; key works; visual and writing styles; who does what; how a comic is made

Weeks 2 and 3: the rules of comic storytelling

  • Script format; planning your pages and spreads; using cliffhangers and reveals; writing panels; writing captions and dialogue

  • Homework - reading excerpts of comics and webcomics for discussion

Weeks 4 & 5: different formats, different stories

  • How different kinds of comics and graphic novels work; the limits and opportunities for storytelling in each category; superhero and licensed work; creator owned OGN; how webcomics work.

  • After some exercises, everyone will work on their own ideas.

  • Homework - develop your idea and a short logline/elevator pitch.

Week 6: an artist’s point of view

  • A working comics artist will give an insight into their process of turning a script into finished artwork.

  • Students will pitch their ideas, with feedback, then work on developing your story.

  • Homework – script your story

Week 7: script development

  • Read and discuss each other’s scripts, also with feedback from tutor.

  • How to approach edits and redrafts.

  • Homework – redraft your script

Week 8: the industry

  • Routes in to the industry; pay and career; networking; pros and cons of self-publishing.

  • Tutor will feedback on each individual student’s redrafted script.

Throughout the course, there will be lots of exercises to try out techniques, plus notes and guides to keep.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This course is suitable for anyone interested in creating comics and graphic novels - from those new to comics to the obsessive collectors! Writers and artists, and writer/artists are all welcome.

About the tutor: This workshop is led by award winning writer Emma Beeby. Emma is one of the new generation of comics and graphic novel writers in the UK, and is the first woman in 36 years to write for Judge Dredd in 2000 AD comics. Her original graphic novel Robbie Burns: Witch Hunter was recently published by Renegade Arts Entertainment and won Best Graphic Novel and Best Writer awards by the Scottish Independent Comic Books Awards in 2015. Emma also writes games and audioplays, including Risen 2: Dark Waters, an open world fantasy RPG console game that was nominated for a Writers’ Guild Award; and also co-scripted several Doctor Who audio dramas for Big Finish Productions. Emma is currently writing a new series of Doctor Who comics for Titan Comics.
