Join writer and creative practitioner Bernadette McBride for her talk on writing short fiction. Learn more about the art of writing short stories and hear about Bernadette's own writing process. A PhD candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Liverpool, Bernadette’s short story For the Man who Died in the Wood was shortlisted for the UK's biggest unpublished writing prize, the Manchester Fiction Prize, in 2020. Her story will appear in a new climate fiction anthology Sunburnt Saints published in November 2021 by Seventy2One which is available to pre-order here. Her work has appeared in several anthologies and she co-edited the anthology A Spray of Hope (University of Liverpool, 2020). She has delivered creative writing initiatives for the University, including a course for The Great Read competition and Writing for Wellbeing for keyworkers across the UK during the first lockdown, through the University's English department. Bernadette teaches on several creative writing modules within the University's English department and won the Liverpool Guild 2019 award for ‘The Biggest Impact on the City of Liverpool’ for her creative writing workshops.

• COVID-19 symptoms – we ask that you do not come to our site if you display any of the three main COVID-19 symptoms, i.e. a new or persistent cough, a high temperature or a loss of taste and smell. In addition to these common symptoms, you should also not attend site if you are suffering from any of the following (evidence now suggests that these may also indicate COVID):

• Face coverings - We ask that you bring your own face covering to site. You will be expected to wear a sunflower lanyard or carry a card IF you cannot wear a face covering or visor.

• COVID testing – we strongly encourage anybody who is visiting site to obtain a COVID test within 3 days of the visit. The test result must be negative.

• Social distancing – the University asks that you to adopt appropriate social distancing when in buildings.

• Keeping hands clean -there will be numerous hand sanitising stations around the building you are visiting. Please use these regularly.

If you have purchased a concession ticket, you may be asked to provide proof of appropriate concession status in order to gain entry to the event.The following forms of identification are accepted:

Disabled – letters from Disability Support Services, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) letters, appropriate Travel/Leisure Cards, and blue badges.

Student – a valid student card, we accept NUS as well as cards issued by your school, college or university.

Benefits recipient – a recent letter or any government document (dated within three months) which states that you are in receipt of benefits, or living in social housing.
