With the First Year Report or Literature Review perhaps coming into focus, it can be tempting to bury our head in the sand.

But a more effective approach to these necessary steps within the PhD process is to find out why we need to do a literature review or produce the first year report; from this knowledge, we can then find out what’s often involved in them and so take control of these necessary processes.

This practical and participatory 3-hour course is in two parts. Part 1 is 2 hours long and is an ‘essentials’ guide to writing the Literature Review and the First Year Report covering the following learning outcomes:

1. Know why we need to do a literature review

2. Know the 4 principal steps undertaken to do a literature review

3. Know how to read Introductions, Conclusions and Abstracts effectively

4. Know the purpose and general requirements of the first year PhD Report

Part 2 is 1 hour, comprising two drafting exercises:

- writing ‘warm-ups’ and

- ‘writing in layers’ to help you get started with writing either the report or an extended piece of writing.

About Dr Matt Lane , Programme Leader

An AHRC-sponsored PhD, from 2010-18, Matt Lane was a Researcher Developer at the University of Cambridge, where in 2017, he was formally recognised for his ‘outstanding contribution’ to the development of early career researchers. Now a Director of The Researcher Development Partnership, Cambridge, and based on his own experiences of doing a PhD, he helps alleviate the stress of research and so specialises in researcher Wellbeing, Writing and Leadership development.
