About this Event

WriteClub Creative Writing Workshop with author Zoë Somerville

Thursday 20th May 7-8pm

Are you writing or interested in writing historical fiction?

This session will cover key questions including:

- What counts as historical fiction? (Introduction)

- Why then? And why that story? Finding your narrative.

- Structural possibilities in historical fiction

- Whose voice is it anyway? Which perspectives to use and why

- How to incorporate real life events or real people into fiction

- How to use language to make the past come alive.

We’ll use examples from a wide range of historical fiction, including Hilary Mantel, Kate Atkinson, Benjamin Myers and Sara Collins.

There will be time for q&a and suggestions for writing experiments.

About your facilitator:

Zoë Somerville is a novelist and English teacher. Her first novel, The Night of the Flood was published by Head of Zeus in September 2020. It is inspired by her home county, Norfolk and the devastating flood of the 1950s. Her second novel The Marsh House, will be released in March 2022 and is set both during the Big Freeze of 1962 and the early 1930s. She is currently writing her third novel, set between 1922 and 1944.

Zoë has worked as an English teacher all over the world. This has included teaching English in Hagi, Japan, the Loire Atlantique, France and the Basque Country; several years in comprehensive schools in South London, Bath and Bristol; four years for the Hospital Education Rehabilitation Service in Somerset; and an international school in Washington, D.C. After completing a creative writing MA at Bath Spa University in 2016, she now combines writing and tutoring.

You can order Zoë's novel The Night of the Flood here.
