Event description

Description

We are delighted to be joined by our Poet in Residence, Hannah Cooper-Smithson, for this creative writing event in February.

Mindfulness is an important part of mental wellbeing. It’s all about awareness – about slowing down and paying attention to the present moment and to your surroundings. It’s about stillness, connection, and a quiet, focused type of attention. In this workshop, led by Hannah, you will be taught how to use these qualities to focus the poetic gaze, and how to look closely at a single image or idea in order to produce mindful poetry inspired by the natural world.

In this session you will:

- Learn how to use mindfulness as a poetic approach

- Discuss the importance of noticing your surroundings in poetry

- Explore the unique natural environment of Creswell Crags’ magnesium-limestone gorge on a guided writing walk (weather permitting)

- Produce your own poetic responses, and receive feedback

You don’t need to have any previous experience – beginners are welcome!

£12 per adult. £10 per student or senior citizen. This workshop is for adults and older teenagers and is not suitable for children.

There is also a charge for parking. Creswell Crags is accessible by train with a 20 minute walk from Creswell station.

Hot drinks will be provided and there is an onsite cafe if you wish to purchase food.

Weather permitting, this session will include a walk into the gorge to experience nature first-hand in our wonderful landscape. Please make sure you dress appropriately for this - with footwear suitable for muddy footpaths and a light waterproof coat. If the weather is really wet, alternative provisions will be made but the workshop will still go ahead.

Please make sure you bring your own writing materials (pen or pencil and notebook) as these will not be provided. If you need to bring a laptop, you may, but please be advised that this will be at your own risk – there will be periods of time where the room will be left unattended, and there is no secure storage available.

If you have an access needs, please let us know in advance so we can ensure these are accomodated.

Hannah Cooper-Smithson is a poet and doctoral researcher at Nottingham Trent University. Her poetry has been published in various journals and anthologies, including The Interpreter’s House, Reliquiae, and becoming-Botanical: a postmodern liber herbalis (Objet-a Creative Studios, 2019).
