Experimental Poetry & Sound

How can we become attuned with the weight of words when composing a poem? How can memories affect the language and vocabulary of a poem? How can we construct and de-construct our thought processes during the act of writing? Through a series of experimental writing and reading exercises Shehzar Doja will lead us through an exploration of performance, elocution, sound, external stimulus, association, recitation, in order to draw out the innate resonating power behind the act of creating poetry: poetry that is dynamic, shifting and powerful. This is an intermediate workshop open to everyone however people who have already some experience in poetry or interest in experimentation may particularly benefit.

The Details

A max of 15 spaces.
This workshop will be hosted online using Webex (instructions will be sent to participants closer to workshop date).
The facilitator will share creative pieces and we will discuss these as a group.
The workshop will include creative prompts, and time to write and share writing.
The workshop includes a 10-15min comfort break.

About Shehzar

Shehzar Doja is a poet and Founder/Editor-in-Chief of the The Luxembourg Review. His work has appeared in New Welsh Review, Pratik, Ceremony, Modern Poetry in Translation, Voice and Verses, Fresh from the Fountain, Fundstücke-Trouvailles (Volume 3) and more. He was named a NewAge newspaper (BD) ‘Youth Icon’ in 2017. He recently co-edited the poetry anthology I am a Rohingya (Arc, 2019)with James Byrne.

The Scottish BAME Writers Network (SBWN) is an advocacy group connecting Scottish BAME writers with the wider literary sector in Scotland, facilitating necessary conversations around inclusive programming, delivering a programme of BAME-led events and providing an online community for BAME (Black, Asian, minority ethnic) writers based in or from Scotland.
