House of Memories, Garden of Stories

This workshop will focus on using artefacts and memories to write compelling fiction, memoir or poetry. This year, Jane Austen’s House Museum is celebrating its 70th birthday and we’ll be making the most of this very special location. We’ll be taking inspiration from Jane Austen’s house and garden, the Museum’s collection of objects, letters and pictures, and Jane Austen’s novels and letters for a series of new exercises that will help you to craft convincing and engaging writing. There will be exercises to take home too so that you can keep using the Chawton magic in your work. This workshop will be suitable for experienced writers as well as those who are just starting out.

Rebecca Smith is the author of three novels published by Bloomsbury as well as Jane Austen’s Guide To Modern Life's Dilemmas, The Jane Austen Writers' Club and a picture book, Where's Jane?. The novel she has just completed draws on 100 years of family history and uses objects and letters in its storytelling. She was the writer in residence at Jane Austen’s House Museum from 2009-2010. Rebecca is a Principal Teaching Fellow in English and Creative Writing at the University of Southampton.

Suitable for all levels, no experience necessary. Please bring a packed lunch.
