Poetic Voice and Memory: the Lyrical Rhythms of Jane Austen

This interactive workshop will explore the relationship between poetry and prose as structured forms of story telling. Writer Sally Bayley will share her experience of writing sentences of prose from the poetry, songs and rhymes she heard as a child and will draw upon the poetry of Jane Austen and the ballad and poetic forms that influenced the rhythms of her sentences. Sally will lead participants in a series of voice exercises designed to develop their sense of lyrical imagination, and show how the lyric forms of poetry and song are essential to good reading and writing practices.

Sally Bayley is a non-fiction writer whose work explores the relationship between autobiography, biography, memoir and literary fiction. She is the author of Girl With Dove: a life built by books (HarperCollins, 2018) and The Private Life of the Diary (Unbound, 2016) as well as books on Sylvia Plath and Emily Dickinson. She is a Teaching and Research Fellow at the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford, and she teaches writing in Oxford as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow.

Suitable for all levels, no experience necessary. Please bring a packed lunch.
