Think lush sets, wonderful fashion and glorious technicolor. Cynically we could say a melodrama about oil wealth, power and sex that paved the way for a number of US soap operas. But only at first glance. Do the superficiality of the design, the exaggeration of the situation and the characters combine to become a purposeful satire of Freudian themes so prevalent in the Hollywood films of the early 50s? Wickedly funny and beautifully acted influential director Douglas Sirk delivers another masterpiece ready for our appreciation.
