Event description

Description

Wrotham Park, a magnificent neo-Palladian mansion, set in the heart of a 2,500 acre estate was designed by Isaac Ware in 1754 for Admiral John Byng. It is unlikely that he ever lived in the house however, as he was executed in 1756 for failing to retake Minorca from the French during the 7 Years War. In 1883 a fire destroyed the interior of the house, but it was rebuilt using the same design. Fortunately most contents of any importance were saved and are in the house, which is still home to the Byng family. The tour of the ground floor will be led by the archivist Charles Dace. Not suitable for those with limited mobility.
