Event description
Public Lecture - Biblicist Communities and Academic Theology: Towards Mutual Understanding

About this event

Since its establishment in 2006, WTC has attracted pioneers and visionary people with a determination to succeed. We have covered the whole enterprise with prayer and sought God’s guidance for every aspect of our work. This makes WTC an enormously exciting enterprise.

To celebrate the past 15 years, Dr Stephen Holmes, Head of Divinity at University of St Andrews, will be giving a public lecture on Biblicist Communities and Academic Theology: Towards Mutual Understanding.

'Many church communities, both in history and today, have little engagement with formal theological training. This can be due to context, or to persecution, or indeed to choice. They often have a rich theological life, built on direct engagement with the Bible, but not using the standard categories of academic theology. Theologians have tended to be dismissive of such communities, and, perhaps in turn, they have seen little need to engage with academic theology, often regarding it as a way of evading the simple claims of Scripture. Using mainly historical examples I will explore how theologians can better understand and engage with such communities, with the prospect that better mutual understanding will be enriching all round.'

We would love you to join us for the lecture and the Q&A which will follow. We will be serving light refreshments, and there will be an opportunity to catch up with staff, Faculty and students, past and present.

The evening will start at 5.30pm and will come to a formal close at 8.00pm.

As we look back over the past years of vision, hard work, prayer and overcoming challenges, we see God’s blessing and favour working in an amazing way in all areas of college life. Despite the pandemic, this past year has been one of unprecedented growth and expansion. As we look forward to the next 15 years, we are excited to see how God will continue to work out his will for WTC, our students and partners.

We look forward to continuing the journey with you all, as part of God’s team.
