Dan Perager Positive Action Officer (WMFS) talks about the ground-breaking overhaul of its recruitment process for firefighters

About this Event

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) have carried out a ground-breaking overhaul of its recruitment process for firefighters, which has seen WMFS rise from 26th, to ranked 2nd in the Top 50 Most Inclusive Employers in the UK.

Working towards ambitious targets for diversity in recruitment of a long term goal of 60% Female and 35% BAME of new entrants, WMFS has been cited as the gold standard in Fire and Rescue Service Recruitment by the Home Office. A sophisticated social media campaign supported by tailored interventions amongst under represented groups has yielded fantastic results, meaning the recruit intake for 2018/2019 was more diverse and more representative of their local communities than ever before in the history of the UK Fire and Rescue Service. Since January 2018, WMFS have employed over 100 new entrant firefighters, with at least 33% Female and 32% BAME. WMFS are currently achieving their target of 40% Female New entrants for 2018/2019, with the most recent course commencing August 2019 seeing that figure rise to 43%.

WMFS have a dedicated Recruitment and Positive Action Officer (Watch Commander Dan Perager), who works within the Diversity Inclusion Cohesion and Equailty (DICE) Team, who designs and runs Pre Recruitment sessions for underrepresented groups including fitness advice, effective communication skills, confidence building and talks from role models within the organisation.
