Perfect for you creative types….

Get some great festive shots in Leeds with us this year – we’ve got lots of techniques to share with you.

Xmas lights are great for things like Zoom bursting, panning, and all kinds of things – it’s rare we get so many lights to experiment with in Leeds, so this is perfect.

What you need to bring

Night photography is best done with a DSLR camera, but many bridge cameras are good enough these days.

They need to be able to :-

  • have “manual” exposure – “M” on the selection dial
  • have up to 30 seconds exposure time – some have less, which is not ideal
  • be able to change the ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed

This is ESSENTIAL – you will be standing your camera on a tripod for many seconds to let light get into the camera, without a tripod you can’t do this workshop unfortunately

If you are looking to buy one, you are better looking second hand for a Manfrotto, Benbo or similar on EBAY than buying a budget – please contact us for free advice.

Wide lenses are best for this workshops – in fact, it’ll probably be the only one we use. Wide means from 10mm to about 28mm – most KIT lenses are fine

Other stuff

  • Head Torch – you look daft, but it keeps your hands free if you’re looking for things in your bag!
  • Fully charged battery AND a spare if you can
  • Empty memory cards – make sure you have space!
  • cable release – handy but not essential
  • warm clothes – we are standing around a lot, so this means cold will get to you more than normal. Many layers are recommended.

What you need to know

This is a night photography beginners workshop – we would expect a reasonable level of experience with the camera to attend. If you’ve been on the previous leeds night workshop, you’ll be fine!

Understand how to change these on your camera:-

  • ISO
  • Shutter speed
  • Aperture
  • Select Manual exposure

If those terms are unfamiliar we recommend booking us for a 1-2-1 beginners session to explain how these things work.

What we’ll show you

We’ll show you all the camera skills needed to get you going. Exposing photos at night is “different” to daytime, so we’ll show you how we do it.

The first half of the night will be all about camera settings and how to get those right – it can be technical but we show you how to learn fast, using your camera screen to review shots and adapt the settings.

By the end of the night you’ll be experienced and understand how to progress to the next level….

This will set you up for things including :-

  • car light trails & long exposures,
  • zoom bursts,
  • light graffiti
  • light painting
  • wire wool sparks
  • our Brimham Rocks Workshop
