XR Southwark Talks: Climate Change is Racist

About this event

Join XRISN’s Esther Stanford-Xosei as she interviews author Jeremy Williams about his new book, Climate Change Is Racist.

It’s set to be another fantastic XR Southwark talk, free to watch online.

Thursday 9th July, 7pm-8:30pm

Climate change is disproportionately caused by the white citizens majority of the global North – but the damage it unleashes falls first and foremost on people of colour in the global South. It’s impacting their lives now.

That makes climate change a racist phenomenon.

Williams argues that structural racism and racial hierarchies can become embedded in international systems, compounding inequality over generations.

His book demonstrates that the struggle for racial justice and the struggle for climate justice are one and the same. Environmental campaigners and anti-racism campaigners have common cause.

Drawing on the pioneers of environmental justice and voices from around the world, Climate Change is Racist is the first book to provide a global overview of climate change and race. Writer and environmental activist Jeremy Williams uses a wide range of sources to tell this story through the people and places most affected on our planet.

Jeremy Williams is a writer and campaigner for environmental and social justice. He writes at The Earthbound Report (twice recognised as Britain’s leading green blog) and is editor of the Extinction Rebellion book, Time to Act. Jeremy grew up in Madagascar and Kenya and now lives in Luton.

He will be interviewed by Esther Stanford-Xosei. Esther is a reparations legal expert, activist, public speaker and author. She is involved with XRISN, the Internationalist Solidarity Movement within XR UK. She is currently completing a PhD on the history of the International Social Movement for Afrikan Reparations in the UK. She is also the co-initiator of the Stop the Maangamizi: Charge Genocide / Ecocide campaign.
