Event description

Description

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) is one of the most versatile, non-destructive analytical techniques available today. Using the hand-held instrument, within a few minutes you can know what elements are present in virtually any material.
It is possible to take an XRF spectrum of virtually any object and identify the elements present. This could be a painting, a wooden carving, bronze cannon, teeth from a burial or cremation, sample of glass, paper etc.

This informal seminar will start with the very basics of XRF and progress through all aspects of the technique. Don’t worry if you have never done XRF before as we will cover:

  1. What are X-Rays?
  2. Health and safety aspects of XRF
  3. Brief look at instrument types
  4. Where does the XRF signal come from in my sample?
  5. What is a spectrum?
  6. Do I need to quantify my data?
  7. Can I quantify my data?
  8. How do I quantify my data?
  9. What is and isn't possible with XRF?

There will be several hand held XRF instruments available on the day to use so bring some samples and try them out. Minimal maths involved by the way!!

Arrival time 09:30 for a 10am start, lunch provided, aim to finish around 5pm.

This seminar will be limited to 20 delegates so tickets on a first come first served basis. TPF Members will receive a 15% discount code to apply at checkout; please contact us at traditionalpaintforum@gmail.com to obtain the discount code if you haven't already received.

The TPF would like to thank Birmingham Museums for providing us with a space for this seminar, and MetPrep for support and sponsposhop of lunch.
