Description

Experience a land rich in history, landscapes and unique in cultural traditions. A trip which gives an informative and first hand experience of Northern Ireland's history and heritage. During your trip, you can explore some of the most important areas affected by the troubles, a significant part of Northern Ireland’s history, including a visit to Derry City Walls and a guest speakers first hand account of their experience during this time. YMCA has been a part of Northern Ireland for over 115 years, the trip will enable you to hear from young people past and present and see the impact YMCA has had in the local community.

Highlights of this Discovery Visit will include:

  • An evening of entertainment includes based on the Ulster-Scots and Irish Traditions, you will experience a rich cultural heritage with vibrant music and dance.

  • A community lunch will include afternoon tea with local food tasting of soda bread and potato bread.

  • A visit to Sloane House that holds an unique role in Irish history as the birthplace of the Orange Institution you’ll have an informative visit that aims to create understanding, education and tolerance through shared spaces.

  • A visit to the Palace Demesne with 300 acres of green space that was the residence of the Archbishops of the Church of Ireland from 1770 to 1975.

  • Meet with key speakers that will share their experience of the troubles an opportunity to hear about Northern Ireland’s diverse history.

  • Discover the city's landmarks with a trip to Titanic Belfast museum a ‘must see’ on any trip to Belfast. An opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the men who built RMS Titanic.

  • A day spent in Belfast will give an opportunity to take a walk through Irish history as one of the most iconic urban sites in Ireland. The tour of the peace walls will highlight the transition to a country of peace and reconciliation.

This visit is being coordinated by YMCA Portadown.

Trip Information
Your trip start point is Belfast International Airport on 29 July, you will need to arrange transport to this location. You will need to contact your host YMCA with your travel arrangements to arrange a collection time. Dinner is arranged for 7pm at your accommodation.

Your visit will finish after lunch at Ballydougan Pottery Friday 2 August. Airport transfer to Belfast Intl is optionally included. you will need to make travel arrangements to London for the start of YMCA175 conference on Sunday 4 August.
Accommodation is arranged with check-out of hotel on Friday 2 August after breakfast, followed by lunch at Ballydougan Pottery. Airport transfer to Belfast Intl is optionally included.

Delegates will need to make their own arrangements for onward travel or additional nights accommodation, to arrive in London no later than Sunday 4 August when YMCA175 begins.
