Among the many classical dance styles of India, Manipuri possesses a quiet elegance but with many moods – sometimes soft and languid in lasya, or the vigorous, forceful tandava. From the large, mostly unknown oeuvre of Manipuri dances, Mitradheya presents Yatra. Split in two halves, the recital will showcase traditional repertoire composed by Oja Bipin Singh, accompanied by choreography on Manipuri by Mitradheya.
Debanjali Biswas, Krishnakali Dasgupta and Debanjana Roy are disciples of Smt.Poushali Chatterjee and have received training in Manipuri classical dance in late Oja Bipin Singh’s style for over 20 years. Th ey are senior dancers of Nandanik Manipuri Dance Academy, Kolkata. As co-founders and choreographers of dance collaborative Mitradheya, they have choreographed Basantabaul (2013), Dorpon (2010), Raas Sankirtan (2008) and Âme (2006). Th ey have performed Manipuri in several dance festivals in India and in Bangladesh, Canada, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, USA and United Kingdom.
