Description

The YCT Board and staff are delighted to announce that Sarah Simpkin, Service manager for CARE (Child At Risk of Exploitation) will be giving this year’s YCT Annual Lecture entitled “Understanding Child Sexual Exploitation – A trauma-based response”.

About Sarah: Sarah Simpkin is currently working with the Children’s Society having been there for six years, two as the service manager for CARE (Child At Risk of Exploitation). Sarah has a background in psychology and counselling. Sarah previously worked within HMP Chelmsford and the Youth Offending Team. In 2013 the Children’s Society were approached by Essex Police to support the engagement of young people for two Child Sexual Exploitation operations, which they did voluntarily. In 2014 they applied for funding to support this work and CARE was created. Over the last two years they have developed their understanding of those subject to, and at risk of, child sexual exploitation.

In this presentation Sarah will provide a deeper understanding of the components that make up child sexual exploitation, namely grooming and consent. She will discuss some of the challenges faced by practitioners working with young people who are exploited and offer a resolution through a ‘trauma-based response’. Sarah will walk through how such trauma may impact on engagement and responses to both professionals and their perpetrators to provide a better empathic understanding when working with them, and highlight that there is no quick fix.

During the event YCT are pleased to include the presentation of the fourth Lady Diana Kemp-Welch Awards. This valuable Award is in memory of our former Patron, and dear friend of YCT, Lady Diana Kemp-Welch, and will be awarded to four young people who, after receiving the support of YCT, have gone on to make significant progress and improvement in their lives.

Refreshments will be available from 5:30pm and the actual lecture will commence at 6pm. The awards will be presented immediately after the lecture and then everybody will be invited to enjoy a buffet and have the chance to network.
