Event description

Description

The Young Energy Professionals Forum and SSE are offering a fantastic opportunity to visit two bespoke research centres at the frontline of innovation in electricity networks. As part of the University of Strathclyde, the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) brings together academia and industry and aims to accelerate the adoption of innovative research and technologies from early stage research into business. The visit will include a tour of the PNDC live distribution network testing facility located on site.

Directly across the road is The National HVDC Centre. High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is an efficient method to transmit electricity from renewable generators (i.e. offshore wind) in remote locations to high demand, urban areas. HVDC systems have lower electrical losses than traditional alternating current (AC) but are very complex. Opened in April 2017, the Centre aims to support and de-risk the deployment of HVDC schemes in Great Britain. Following a coffee break, there will be a short presentation and a tour of the HVDC simulation test facility.
