Event description
Yiddish Revolutionaries - A forgotten history of the Jewish Left through song, kezmer and word.

About this Event

Yiddish Revolutionaries is a performance of Yiddish songs, Klezmer music and readings. The performance runs for 2 hours including an interval. The prime aim is to be an evening’s entertainment, spreading awareness of a wonderful range of songs – expressing love, anger, despair, pathos, resistance and hope, and also humour. It is intended that people will hear something of the commonality of experiences across place, time, culture and country.

The songs mostly come from the late 19th century and early 20th century and reflect both the experience and the politics of the time. They are from the northern and eastern European Jewish communities, and were written and sung in Yiddish – the common language of Jewish secular life. Yiddish is predominantly a Germanic language, though written in Hebrew script. In the performance translations will be given for all the songs. Some are folk songs, others composed songs and they vary from songs sung in the home, to the workplace, to the theatre, and to the political rally.

The songs are interspersed with readings from personal accounts and literature, linking the songs to personal narrative. There will also be Klezmer music played by the band showing some of the secular and celebration music of the time and place.
