About this Event

About Us

The 2050 Climate Group is an award-winning charity working to engage, educate and empower Scotland's young leaders to take action on climate change. The organisation runs the Young Leaders Development Programme (YLDP), a free development course on climate change and leadership for young people in Scotland. The 2050 Climate Group is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Scottish Charity Number SC047206) and our team of volunteers plan and deliver the YLDP.

Module 5 - Climate Change in the Political Sphere

The fifth module of the YLDP is a Climate Change module and moves into our political sphere of influence. The previous four modules covered climate change knowledge and leadership skills in our personal and professional spheres. Module 5 will focus on how climate change factors in the world of politics. What are the mechanisms at all levels of government that impact on the climate issues we care about? Come along to learn what young people can do to influence politicians and the decisions they make on a local, national and international level.

Join us in Stirling for workshops, talks and panel sessions from politicians, climate activists and NGOs .

This module is open to members of the public. no prior knowledge or experience is required, all are welcome.

The module will be divided into two parts:

Morning - Understanding the spectrum of climate activism from influencing climate policy to non-violent direct action.

Afternoon - "Question Time" panel session - your chance to put your burning questions to a panel of politicians, activists and think-tank representatives. Workshop with Anna Richardson (Glasgow City Council) on the role of politics in a just transition to becoming carbon neutral. Keynote speech by Ross Greer MSP on Young People in Politics.

We aim to make the module as accessible as possible, so don't feel you have to be a fully-fledged environmentalist to get the most out of the sessions; climate change newbies are also welcome!

Lunch

A delicious vegan lunch will be provided. If you have any additional dietary requirements, please do let us know!

We'd encourage you to bring your own water bottle, reusable coffee mug and notebook to use during the day. We endeavour to minimise food waste by catering for only the number of registered attendees but just in case we have leftovers, please feel free to bring a container to bring the extra home with you!

Costs

We care passionately about keeping our events free and accessible to all. Even though they're free they still have a cost. On average our events involve 100+ volunteer hours and significant financial resources per head. We really want to see you there but, if you sign up and can no longer attend, please let us know.

Public Attendance

While this module is for YLDP participants, we open up all YLDP Climate Change modules (Modules 1, 3 and 5) to the public, so feel free to encourage a curious friend to sign up for a ticket and encourage these important conversations to spread further throughout society!

Participation Fund

We know that leaders come from everywhere and are from all backgrounds - this is why we vary location and choose areas that are easy to access via public transport. 2050 Climate Group have a small amount of funding set aside to reduce barriers to participation for young people in Scotland who might not be able to attend our events otherwise. If you are in need of financial assistance for your travel or for any other support that will enable you to participate in this event, please check the eligibility criteria and complete the following form. Please note, limited funds are available and applications are processed on a first-come-first-served basis in prioritised batches and we reserve the right to close applications at any time.

Final Notes

The building is fully accessible, but if you have any specific access requirements, please let us know.

We look forward to seeing you in Stirling!
