Event Details

An evening of North Korean film and interviews, with Amnesty International

Yodok is arguably the most brutal of North Korea's concentration camps. Beyond North Korea, we only get glimpses into life in the camp from the few survivors that manage to escape. This evening, we will hear their stories.

The film

Feature documentary Yodok Stories gives a remarkable glimpse into the horrific world of the camps, with rare testimonies from survivors and prison guards who have fled to South Korea. Directed by Andrzej Fidyk, the film has received critical acclaim at festivals around the globe.

Q&A session with 76-year old Kim Young Soon, imprisoned for gossiping

The screening will be followed by a unqiue opportunity to hear from, and put your questions to, Kim Young Soon - a former Yodok prisoner who appears in the film. Kim Young Soon was sent to Yodok in 1970 for 'gossiping about an affair Kim Jong-Il' with a friend. She escaped nine years later.

Kim Young Soon's family were imprisoned in Yodok alongside her - a common practice in a system of 'guilt by association'. Her 8-year old son and parents died in the camp.

North Korea's concentration camps

Right now, more than 200,000 men, women and children are locked up in North Korea's prison camps. Torture, starvation and murder are systemic and daily occurrences in the camps. Few survive.
