Event description

Description

Classes are £7.50 drop-in or a discounted £21 for a block of three introductory workshops.

Classes will then hold a weekly slot every Monday from 10:00-11:15am, in the beautiful Front Room of the Royal Exchange Theatre.

Yoga for Performers begins at the Royal Exchange Theatre in the New Year (2018). We welcome experienced and aspiring performers from a broad range of performance backgrounds; from poets to spoken-word artists, dancers to actors, musicians to singers, athletes to acrobats and everywhere in between.

You are invited to join us and find integrity in physical alignment, freedom in the body and breath, and control of the meanderings of the mind.

This course is designed to;

  • Cultivate balance between flexibility/ instability and strength/ rigidity in the muscles and joints of the body

  • Create expansion and spaciousness in areas of the body performers use most such as the face, chest, thoracic spine and limbs

  • Strengthen and stabilise those areas which provide support to the rest of the body, such as the inner arches of the feet, core muscles and lumbar spine

  • Increase stamina, balance and coordination

  • Boost the immune system

  • Foster an awareness of the breath through pranayama (breathwork) and mantra (Sanskrit sounds)

  • Develop presence, focus and stillness through relaxation and meditation

  • Inspire an understanding of and trust in our own inner teacher.

In the following three introductory workshops we will root our practice in the context of a holistic approach to yoga, where the focus moves past merely the physical body and seeks to positively influence on the subtle bodies through pranayama, mantra, mudra, meditation and relaxation. Following these introductory workshops, we will meet as a group on a weekly basis, to develop and deepen our practice as performers.
