Heworth Group argues that referendum result should be overturned
A new Left/Green discussion group met on Wednesday evening in the Shoulder of Mutton, Heworth, to discuss the various crises precipitated by last week’s referendum. Lots of different views were expressed.
Some felt that an alliance of anti-Tory parties is needed to demand a change in the referendum result via a democratic general election.
Most agreed that the Labour Party had missed an “open goal” by triggering a leadership crisis when the Conservative Party was in such disarray. Others felt that Jeremy Corbyn “had to go”.
Migration was recognised as an important issue that politicians of all shades have failed to grapple with. But the main issue was agreed to be the “Westminster bubble” and the current government’s austerity programme – these have led to general anger which is now being exploited and turned into aggression against migrants. (And most Britains are migrants in one way or another.)
The group now meets monthly at 7.30 pm on the 3rd Thursday of every month (Snug bar, Royal Oak, Goodramgate)
